BMO 200
Making Wishes Matter: BMO’s Fountain Flips the Script on Giving
Insight
For centuries, people have tossed coins into fountains as a small act of hope a way to momentarily believe that their future could change for the better. Even in a modern world, that instinct to wish, hope, and seek possibility remains deeply human.
Tension
Financial institutions are inherently connected to people’s futures, yet most banking experiences feel transactional and emotionally disconnected from the hopes people carry through everyday life. For its 200th anniversary, BMO had an opportunity to turn banking into something more human, optimistic, and participatory.
Idea
We reimagined the traditional wishing fountain as a connected digital experience using a monumental flip dot installation that allowed people across three countries to toss virtual coins, share wishes, and “wish it forward” transforming a timeless ritual of hope into a collective act of community giving.
